New Delhi (Syndicate Features): A news item earlier in the month dealt with sportspersons in Punjab Police facing demotion because of a court order.  This has caused considerable distress within its ranks.  But that it had finally surfaced with such drastic measures for remedy should not have surprised anyone.
Like many Police forces in the country Punjab takes extra pride in the achievement of sportspersons in the State and has quite often offered jobs at the senior level without any preamble. On the face of it the action of Punjab Police in offering jobs to sportspersons is very commendable but there have always been some pertinent questions on the issue.

The Police force is an important arm of the State and personnel opting for it have to undergo strict and thorough training at all levels before qualifying for a particular rank. And promotions are naturally based on the performance of an officer in his job. These promotions have to be earned. They are not gifted to anyone.

Under the circumstances it is but natural for officers to feel envious of those who join their ranks on the strength of some achievement in the field of sport. It must be making them wonder what the police work is all about. Here on the one hand these men and women are having to work all round the year, at all times to achieve some sort of distinction and on the other hand somebody who has no inkling of the sweat and toil of the police takes wickets as an off-spinner or wins a medal at an international track and field competition is suddenly decorated with a rank and salary of an officer without any risks involved.

All this does not make sense and it certainly is unfair to both the Police and the personnel. The Forces cannot make a present of a rank to anyone. It is something he or she has to earn and be worth it.

There are other questions involved when such jobs are gifted away. Do these men and women who join the police force on the strength of their sporting achievement ever go through the grind?  They get all the facilities and perks but rarely having to sweat it out.

There should be reward for sporting achievement but it should come from the Governments in some other form. The Police Force, like the Army and para military forces are there for a specific purpose.  Their dignity and discipline should not be touched.  They should never be devalued.

Sportspersons should be given money, medals and jobs but without disturbing the accepted norms which govern the country’s Police forces. It should be remembered always that a policeman need not be a sportsperson but a sportsperson cannot always be a policeman. (Syndicate Features)
